With a generous $1 million gift from the Scharbauer Foundation, the capital project will bring a new chapter to the downtown facility.
“The Scharbauer Foundation has long been a catalyst for meaningful change in Midland and the Permian Basin, championing initiatives that promote opportunity, strengthen families and uplift the region,” said Christine Bearden, CEO of the Midland YMCA. “Their $1 million commitment not only propels this campaign forward but also affirms their belief in the YMCA’s mission to serve the community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.”
The Y said that the expansion will also include a vibrant new space for social connection, reinforcing its role as a community cornerstone.
“For decades, the YMCA of Midland has been a trusted resource for families, offering child care, wellness and recreational programs for all ages,” said Scharbauer Foundation CEO and President Mary Ann Beninati. “Scharbauer Foundation is proud to support the YMCA’s campaign to improve and expand its indoor pool area, ensuring the facility continues to serve future generations of Midlanders.”
The project will bring a new indoor aquatic space to the center, featuring a zero-entry pool, lap lanes, whirlpool, recreational slide and upgraded wet areas.
According to a YMCA representative, the board of directors approved the capital project plan in November, reflecting a community needs assessment.
“We conducted a community needs assessment,” said Elizabeth Harris-Jurado. “Many families said they want an aquatic center where they can bring families and be together. We’re listening to that need.”
The YMCA’s current pool is 70 years old and is located on the second floor of the facility. The new pool will be moved to the first floor, will have many windows for natural sunlight, and will offer an expanded deck for a social seating area.
The new pool is known as a zero-entry pool, meaning that the pool’s entrance features a gradual, sloped transition into the water instead of stairs or ladders.
“It’s time for a refresh,” Harris-Jurado said. “We’re excited to be serving Midland.”
